Correction of Retrognathic Jaw and Severe Overjet with Herbst Appliance

This 30-month comprehensive case for a preteen addressed a Class II Division 1 malocclusion characterized by a retrognathic (receded) lower jaw, severe overjet, generalized diastemas, and a constricted, V-shaped upper arch. Treatment utilized a Herbst appliance to stimulate and redirect mandibular growth, followed by traditional braces to coordinate the arches and close the spacing.

Central to the success of this case was the use of a cephalometric radiograph (Ceph). Taking a Ceph is critical for diagnosing the specific skeletal relationship of the jaws and determining the patient's peak stage of facial growth. By analyzing these measurements, Dr. Martinez personally evaluates these diagnostic films to ensure treatment is initiated at the precise physiological "window of opportunity" to maximize skeletal correction, achieving the most stable, functional, and aesthetically balanced profile for each patient.
